Duty to God Requirements in Upper Ranks

Posted on Aug 7 2022 - 12:20pm

The Star, Life, and Eagle ranks each have a requirement, something to the effect of, "Tell how you have done your duty to God and how you have lived the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your everyday life."  In fact every rank back to Tiger Cubs has something like that.  Historically I have not done enough of a job treating this requirement.  It's intentionally vague enough that it isn't specific to any religious group, and so writing down a set of detailed requirements for it is difficult.

I want to start ticking up the significance of this requirement.  I'm going to do this in the upper ranks for now.  (Star, Life, and Eagle)  Please also remember you do NOT have to wait until you are ready for your scoutmaster conference to do this requirement.  Really it's better if you get it done sooner.

So for now, the guidance is this - you must do this requirement as a separate conversation with me or an ASM.  In fact, I'd really prefer for now if you did it with me specifically, as I'm trying to learn better how to think about requirements and the level of understanding that's appropriate for your age group.  We're not going to do this requirement as a part of the scoutmaster conference any more.

You must have prepared for the discussion before you have it, with something in writing, whether they're just notes or a complete essay.

The central question:

List out things that you see being important to living the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.  Try to think through how you understand your duty to being a morally upright person, and how you determine that duty in different situations. In a world full of people who will tell you what they think your moral duty should be, who do you listen to? Who and what do you believe?
